Martin Public Schools Solar Project

Being energy efficient, reducing our carbon footprint, and solidifying a consistent energy bill for the next 15-20 years are some of the intentions of the solar project. We are very close to making phase one of the solar project a reality. The plan is to work out the final details with Board approval for the project in July. The first phase alone will generate 187,000 kWh per year or 4,000+ tons of CO2. The solar panels will be installed on the current facility roofs in August, and will begin generating electricity soon after. The main goal of the solar project is to provide 99 percent of the school’s energy needs. Phase two and three of the solar project will take place after the new auditorium and varsity gymnasium are constructed. These phases will include a combination of solar panels and solar arrays.

During the past few months, we have worked diligently on the LED project for the current facilities and grounds. The transition to LED from the traditional lighting will reduce our carbon foot print by 243,000 kwh, or 5,000 tons of CO2, and the district will save an estimated $24,000 per year in the budget. This is good for our school and community. The most recent estimate for this project is $75,000 through the bidding process, and the project will be completed by the end of August.

Roof replacement work is almost finished, and excavating of the old baseball field and track/practice football field is well under way. Footings for the new gymnasium, auditorium, and wrestling room are being created, and inside the building, mechanical work is being addressed, and the new boiler system has been installed.
